SHORT HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN-CANADIAN CLUB OF WATERLOO-WELLINGTON

According to the latest poll, there are about four thousand people of hungarian origin and descent in the Golden Triangle area of Kitchener, Guelph, Cambridge and surroundings. The largest number of hungarians arrived in this area in 1956-57, just after the Hungarian Revolution was crushed by oppression.

In 1962 some of our dedicated people thought to gather this relatively large number of people, forming a Club to maintain and preserve our national heritage, to keep our language and culture alive.

As the legend goes, this schoolhouse was built by Dutch settlers in the 19th century. This small community was called the Village of Kossuth as it shows on contemporary maps, named after Loui Kossuth, a great liberal politician and Governor of Hungary in the Reveolutionary times of 1848-49.

With the coming of the twentieth century this small community disappeared, but the schoolhouse remained. The building was acquired by our founding members of the Club in 1962.

The road, just off Hwy 24 south was renamed with the approval of the Ministry of Hwy and Transportation in 1977 as Kossuth Road.

During the past 36 years the Club faced many difficulties, but the common goal, keeping our national culture and at the same time giving our part of mosaic to the Canadian Multiculturalism, which we believe is the strength of this great country.

Since the acquisement of the building we did some renovations and extended the building in such a way, that the front of the old school house kept its original design.

The Club is now the main gathering place to the area Hungarians. Dances are held each month, and language classes were held for the children, during the winter months.

A dance group was formed in 1970 and our youngsters have participated in Multicultural events in all the three cities. Great artists were our guests in the past.

As it stands, the Clubhouse, named as Kossuth Hall is a great cultural centre of the Golden Triangle. At the present time our membership is around 300, including people of other national origin.

In the future, the Club will stand for its original goal, but at the same time would like to work with cooperation with other ethnic groups as well as Canadians.

We are all proud to live in this community and the Hungarian-Canadian Club will always be proud of their contribution to Canadian Multiculturalism. All the Hungarians are very greatful to this country, who gave us food when we were hungry, who gave us hope when we were in despair, but most of all this country gave us a home when we were homeless.

I am sure, that all the members of the Club join us, when we say on behalf of all hungarians, Thank you Canada!
